How many points is a win worth? What about 5th place in a field of 14? Poker League gives every league a tested points table, a flexible formula with four presets and a rating that rewards consistency — and works it all out the moment the last player is knocked out.

What a poker league points system does
A points system turns single tournaments into a season. Every night players earn points for where they finish; add the nights together and you have a standings table, a champion and a reason to come back next week. A good system rewards winning, rewards beating bigger fields and still gives the players lower down something to play for.
The classic points table
Every new league starts with a tested points table for 2 to 100 players. Last place always gets 1 point, points climb with every player you finish ahead of, and the top places get a growing bonus, so a win stands out without making the rest of the field irrelevant. Bigger fields are worth more: a win against 20 players earns three times a win against 10.
| Players | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 5th | 6th | 7th | 8th | Last |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 14 | 10 | 7 | 4 | 2 | 1 | |||
| 8 | 18 | 14 | 10 | 8 | 6 | 4 | 2 | 1 | |
| 10 | 25 | 18 | 15 | 12 | 10 | 8 | 6 | 4 | 1 |
| 12 | 35 | 26 | 20 | 17 | 14 | 12 | 10 | 8 | 1 |
| 15 | 50 | 38 | 32 | 26 | 22 | 19 | 16 | 14 | 1 |
| 20 | 75 | 58 | 48 | 41 | 35 | 30 | 26 | 24 | 1 |
Any value in the table can be changed for any field size, so a league can keep the scoring it has always used.
The points formula
Instead of a table, a season can use a formula that scales to any field: points = multiplier × players^field weight ÷ place^steepness. Five settings shape it:
- Multiplier — the overall size of the numbers (10 by default).
- Field weight — how much a bigger field is worth. At 0.5 a win against 16 players is worth twice a win against 4.
- Steepness — how fast points drop from one place to the next. 0 gives everyone the same, 1 is very steep.
- Scoring share — the share of the field that scores (100% = every place).
- Participation points — what the places outside the scoring share still get for turning up.
The editor shows the full points table for any field size while you move the settings, before anything is saved.
Ready-made presets
Four presets cover the usual choices; each can be fine-tuned afterwards.
- Balanced — points grow with the field and drop gently by place; every place scores.
- Top places — steep at the top; only the top half scores, everyone else gets 1 point for playing.
- Flat — small gaps between places, so attendance counts for a lot.
- Field size ignored — the same points for a place however many players there are.
| Preset | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 5th | 6th | 7th | 8th | Last |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Balanced | 35 | 24 | 20 | 17 | 15 | 14 | 13 | 12 | 10 |
| Top places | 35 | 17 | 12 | 9 | 7 | 6 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Flat | 21 | 18 | 16 | 15 | 14 | 13 | 13 | 13 | 11 |
| Field size ignored | 10 | 7 | 6 | 5 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 3 |
Bigger fields, bigger points
Beating 20 players is harder than beating 6, and every system in Poker League except Field size ignored reflects that:
| Players | Classic table | Balanced | Top places | Flat | Field size ignored |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 14 | 24 | 24 | 17 | 10 |
| 10 | 25 | 32 | 32 | 20 | 10 |
| 20 | 75 | 45 | 45 | 25 | 10 |
| 40 | 175 | 63 | 63 | 30 | 10 |
Points, percentage and rating
Total points reward the players who come every week. To reward quality as well, Poker League also tracks each player's share of the maximum possible points — the winner's points in every tournament they played — and ranks the standings by a rating that combines both: rating = points × share of the maximum × 2.
- Player A: 150 points from 20 tournaments, 30% of the possible points → rating 90.
- Player B: 120 points from 10 tournaments, 48% of the possible points → rating 115.
Player B leads on rating despite fewer points. A league that prefers a pure points race can rank by points instead.
An Elo rating across seasons
Season points reset every season; the Elo rating does not. Everyone starts at 1500, and after each tournament you gain for every player you finished ahead of — more when they are rated higher — and lose for everyone who finished ahead of you. A rating is provisional for the first 5 tournaments.
How to choose a points system
- Small home game (6–10 players, same faces every week): keep the classic table — simple and familiar.
- Fields that vary a lot from night to night: use Balanced, so a big night is worth more than a quiet one.
- You want wins to matter most: Top places, and pay participation points so nobody feels left out.
- Casual league where attendance is the point: Flat, or keep the table and rank by points instead of rating.
- Ending the season with a final? Let the points decide who qualifies for the Masters.
Calculated the moment the last player is out
Nobody has to add anything up. When the tournament clock records the last knockout, Poker League awards the points, updates the standings, the rating and the Masters race, and every player sees the new table on their phone.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best points system for a poker league?
For most home games, a table where last place gets 1 point, points climb with every player you beat and the top places get a bonus. It rewards wins and bigger fields without making the lower places worthless. That is Poker League's default.
Should a bigger field give more points?
Yes, usually. Beating 20 players is harder than beating 6. Poker League's table and its Balanced formula both grow the points with the field; the Field size ignored preset does not.
Do players get points just for playing?
With the classic table every place scores, at least 1 point. With the formula you choose the share of the field that scores and the participation points for everyone else.
Can I use my league's own points table?
Yes. Every value of the table can be edited for every field size from 2 to 100 players, or you can switch the season to the formula.
What is the difference between points and rating?
Points are the season total. Rating multiplies the points by the share of the maximum possible points a player earned, so a player who wins often from fewer nights can rank above one who simply played more.
Can the points system change during a season?
Each season has its own scoring. Changing it recalculates that season's standings from the stored results, so it is best decided before the first tournament.
